South Africa was in danger of a further credit downgrade due to problems in the mining sector and their likely impact on the rand, Reserve Bank governor Gill Marcus warned yesterday. The rand, which had depreciated by 8.4 percent against the dollar from the start of the year to the time of the bank’s monetary policy committee (MPC) in March, had fallen another 4.6 percent, Marcus said at the end of yesterday’s MPC meeting, which left the repo rate unchanged at 5 percent.
